Gre Gt BOV> Hi Brad/Angela: | am writing a story for Friday’s paper about former Flint Mayor James Sharp, Jr. calling for federal investigations and more comprehensive outreach efforts to contact and test those who may have drank Flint water containing unsafe levels of lead. Sharp, who was Flint mayor from 1983 to 1987, also has another somewhat unique perspective on the issue of contaminated drinking water. He was a U.S. Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune in the 1950s, where it was later determined drinking water was contaminated with cancer-causing chemicals such as the dry cleaning fluid perchloroethylene. Sharp told the Free Press in an interview Wednesday that his daughter born on the base, who died at the age of two months, may have been a victim of the toxins. Sharp said after learning of the contamination in the 1980s, officials created a database and contacted him and thousands of others who may have drank the water. 1. EBLinvestigations: the investigation report, including the water information, should be provided to the MDHHS Healthy Homes Section within two weeks on average after the investigation is completed. This includes time for receipt of specimen test results (water, dust wipes, soil). 2. Elevated EBLs: there were 18 children with elevated EBLs shown in the summary report as of October 30, 2015. | have the more detailed age breakdown for the updated report which would show data from 10/1/2015 to 11/13/2015. There are 22 children with elevated EBLs. Of children < 6, 14 have levels 5 — 14, 2 have levels 15 —44. Among children 6 to 17 years, 5 have levels 5— 14 and 1 has a level 15-44. In summary, 19 children fall into the 5 — 14 category and 3 in the 15 -44 category. So most kids are in the 5 — 14 mcg/dL category if they have elevated EBLs. The table is attached. Epidemiology is not planning on sending these more detailed tables up to you routinely, but this table gives you a feel for the testing by age group and whether or not the test, if known, is venous or capillary. Epi is running data for # of tests and # of tests >= 5 micrograms per deciliter between January 1, 2013 through April 14, 2014 for Flint residents in these age groups: Children < 6 years old Children 6 through 17 Adults who are 18 and older. | spoke with Michelle Bruneau and she will make changes to the one-page summary once we have the numbers (hopefully by 5 PM or shortly thereafter today). Michelle thought it would be better to have context for the three age groups that are already shown on the one-page summary rather than focusing on children < 6 only. (As mentioned, Eden was fine with the proposal when | spoke with her this afternoon.) Michelle will make the changes and you can see if they are helpful. In terms of the two Zips that are in the summary but not in the trends, the numbers were too small to be included in the trend line.
