FW: Flint water

Importance: High All— Please see below from Egan. This is essentially the same “?” Nancy Kaffer asked of Jeremy a couple weeks back. Intend to say something along the lines of the following...please advise. The Tucker-Young report offered an initial perspective on the situation, but as additional information was received and considered by the city, city officials determined that KWA offered the best long-term solution for Flint. As has been noted previously, all involved, the mayor and city council, believed the move to KWA was appropriate and supported the move. As we have discussed previously, consideration of the development of a Flint-area/Genesee County water system had been on-going since the early 2000’s and the City of Flint had been in discussions about joining a new system for much of that time.

Importance: High Sara- Wanted to update you on a couple of potential stories that you could see over the weekend. First Nancy Kaffer of the Freep is writing a column for Sunday to do with Flint and the choice of KWA over DWSD. She had FOIA’d a doc from MEDQ that had a 2013 report from Andy Dillion that says that KWA is a risky proposition and that DWSD was a better option. [let her know that the report was just a starting point in the process and as more information became available a joint decision was made by the EM, council and other key city leaders. Second Matt Dolan from the Freep called and said that he was doing a one year wrap up on Detroit coming out of Bankruptcy and he wanted to speak to Ron Rose. | offered up Nick instead (with his permission) Nick did a 15 minute phone interview with him. After a few softballs about a year later Matt opened a line of questions about possible pension liabilities in 2024. NK did a good job of staying high level. | believe that Matt reached out on his own and spoke to Ron as well as John Hill. Let me know if you have any questions. xxxEND_PAGE:treasury01_b33_5236_5444_078 Weekly Conference Call Notes — Nov. 09, 2015 Allen Park —Nov. 6 —Mayor Matakas, M. Kibby, B. Cady E. It is expected that the additional corrosion control agents will further reduce the damage caused to water mains and service lines by water corrosion. While using the Flint River as a water source, the City was not required to use corrosion control as part of its Water Optimization Plan. That decision led to accelerated damage to underground pipes due to the corrosiveness of Flint River water. “We are trying to reverse the effects of the more corrosive river water and better protect our underground infrastructure from deteriorating, and in turn protect our families and our children from exposure to metals such as lead and copper,” said DPW Director Howard Croft. Older houses built before 1986 have the likelihood of having plumbing and services lines containing lead and copper. Last month Flint resumed buying treated water from Detroit after it was learned that elevated levels of lead had been found in children living in the City. Flint also worked with local aid agencies to provide water tap mounted filters to every water customer in the City. Tests on water hardness throughout the City have confirmed that Detroit water has made its way to every customer. -END- City Hall 1101 S. Ed- | took a call from a reporter at ABC 12 who had some questions about the City administrator. Last night the new mayor said that they wanted to bring in a new city administrator. What is that process? Isita majority vote by the City Council and the RTAB? They also wanted to know the length of Tasha Henderson’s contract. Any assistance you could provide would be appreciated.
