Importance: High Sara, Dave, Terry, Mr. Earley got a request from Freep's Nancy Kaffer for a comment on the Flint Water situation. She is doing a column for Sunday's paper that is a follow up to the paper's story that ran yesterday on Flint water quality. She asked for his comment, she said, since water system decisions were made under his term as EM. The following is the statement that he would like to send to Nancy. Her deadline is, as always, rapidly approaching. Apologies for short turn-around time. “The decision for Flint to join the Karegnondi Water Authority and to leave the Detroit Water and Sewerage System was made under the authority of previous Flint Emergency Managers prior to my appointment in October 2013. And, while the deal to sell the pipeline had been in process as | assumed my position, it was finalized after thorough review and with the health and well-being of all citizens -- from small children to senior citizens and everyone in between -- taken into consideration. An even bigger concern that we must all be paying attention to is the aging infrastructure and water distribution systems in all of our urban communities -- many of which are more than 100 years old. Where the focus should be placed moving forward is not on what we do in the interim between now and when the new system is complete, but what is done in the long-term to replace the crumbling water distribution system that exits throughout Flint and Genesee County. lam confident that the city of Flint is following the standards of the State of Michigan's Department of Environmental Quality for safe water compliance, as it should."
