Snyder and the administration have been working closely with Mayor Weaver to focus on health issues affecting children and other city residents, and address water infrastructure challenges. The state has given more than $10 million in grants and other financial assistance to cover part of the payment for the temporary switch to the Great Lakes Water Authority until Flint’s new water source is ready to go online as well as efforts to improve existing city water infrastructure and purchase water filters for residents. The administration also has in place an action plan that includes increased testing, free filters and other steps to help residents. The governor also appointed a bipartisan task force charged with reviewing all of the city, state and federal government actions and recommending changes looking forward that can address potential challenges in Flint and other cities. Reaction is several fold, Kyle. This switch to KWA as well as using the community's long-time back-up water supply (Flint River} was pushed or supported by the city and comroaunity and that DW5D was terminating Flint frorn its system (see attached letter again just in case} necessitating another source. We also know Darnell cares deeply about the kids and communities he serves, That said, we're focused on helping solve this challenging infrastructure issue, moving forward quickly and doing everything we can to engure that Flint has safe drinking water and public health is protected - both in the immediate short-term, mid-term and long-term. Per your text ... Gov. Snyder spoke with Sen. Ananich this morning about how the state can continue working with Flint city leaders. We believe protecting public health is paramount and safe, clean, accessible drinking water is essential . That's what we are focused on helping ensure and deeply share the Senator’s commitment to helping address the issue. We just received the letter from the senator and are reviewing his ideas. The governor and state agencies have been closely working with Flint leaders on their infrastructure challenges for months, including providing $4.2 million in grants and restructured loan financing to provide resources needed to locate and fix infrastructure problems and add the carbon filtration system, additional testing and helping identify and provide filters. It’s also important that people have accurate information about their health and water. The MI Depts of Environmental Quality and Health and Human Services are testing water and working with local agencies and Flint residents on issues related to what they can do if they have concerns about the pipes in their homes. {On background only: You probably recall the issues and challenges re: the history with DWSD. It’s also important to note that switching back to Detroit water will not necessarily have the effect that some hope for or expect.
