Flint water filters question

To
Susan Moran , Eden Wells
Nancy and | are sharing a condo here at the MALPH conference, and we’re both working away on our laptops this evening. She drafted, and I’ve been reviewing the memo we want to send to the home visiting providers in the Flint area. Nancy necessarily crafted her draft memo (which you will receive tomorrow for your approval before we send it out) based on the talking points MDHHS developed and has shared publicly. In reviewing it, | raised the question about whether, per the talking points, HV families are considered MDHHS clients or not. The list of programs they have to be in and provide documentation for reads like a list for the old DHS, not a list that is inclusive of both departments. Nancy and | both reread, discussed—and agreed we need this clarified so we can accurately inform the HV providers what the specific options are for these families for obtaining the water filters. As you are well aware, our HV moms/babies are among the groups most at risk in this situation. Most all of them are on Medicaid, HV is also an MDHHS program. We both just assumed these clients would be considered MDHHS clients, but in reading the talking points, we’re not so sure. We are asking our HV providers in the Flint area to reach out to the HV participants to be sure they receive the necessary lead prevention/intervention information, that they get the support they need to truly understand what this means---AND that they help the clients access the water filters. Many of them will be in WIC, a few in the “DHS” programs listed, but we 3 xxxEND_PAGE:dhhs02_b0032_0165_0168_3 000168 were pkamriag to say that aeeess could be threawth WIC as OMe resource, as well as tireaegh the distribution options for MPHTS clients’. Please advise. Thariic! Brenmtia Fink, ASCSSW. Director, Divtsion ef Family art] Community Health Michigan Department of Health end Hurren Services 1®9 W. Your encouraging and supportive emails to staff working on this are very much appreciated. Obviously hours and hours of extra work is being spent on this by many people, and other priority tasks momentarily set aside (to continue to accumulate!). | appreciate your positive responses, along with whatever additional guidance is needed—it’s so well done © And, not the least of all by any means---thanks so much for your exemplary lead role on this. You lead on time spent, commitment shown, responsive style, integrity prioritized and keeping team spirit up. Thanks, Eden. I’m glad you’re here, and in this role! Brenda Fink, A.C.S.W. Re: Flint Water Situation

Pulling in Geralyn to respond Sent from my iPhone We are getting lots of questions here from our NFP and MIHP provders. We are thinking to ask all providers for those, and our other evidenced base HV provders that cover that geographic area to be sure to share the advisory the Mark V from the HD shared, and help the moms to understand what flushing the water means etc (remembering that written notices are not some moms primary way of understanding info). Any reason we should not go ahead and do so? Brenda Fink, A.C.S.W. Director, Division of Family and Community Health Michigan Department of Health and Human Services 109 W. I’m including Stan this time, as likely we’d want to be sure we’re in sync w/WIC as well, given most of our moms/infants are in both programs. Brenda Fink, A.C.S.W.
