ODWMA reported that we are continuing to field inquiries regarding city of Flint’s water issues and their violation of the drinking water standard for disinfection byproducts (total trihalomethanes, TTHMs). We have also recently published a set of draft rules in the Michigan Register. The proposed rules address our need to adopt federal changes to the Safe Drinking Water Act, along with some additional housekeeping and other minor modifications. Our public hearing on the proposed rules is scheduled for February igth, In addition, this month ODWMA staff participated in the 64'" Annual Onsite Wastewater Conference held here in Lansing. Approximately 500 people attended the conference; with over 120 state and local government representatives, 200 pumpers, 80 installers, and other industry representatives including designers and service providers. The conference was a big success.

ODWMA has recently spent a significant amount of time responding to inquiries about a violation of the drinking water standard for disinfection byproducts (total trihalomethane, TTHM) in the city of Flint. Lansing District Office staff (Mike Prysby, Adam Rosenthal, and Steve Busch) have been working with city management, responding to citizen inquiries, as well as answering media and legislative inquiries. It should be noted that operational changes made by the city before they exceeded the maximum contaminant level (MCL) but after elevated quarterly results were available last summer have reduced the TTHM levels significantly in the latest round of monitoring. Because of the way this standard is calculated, however, it is anticipated that will take multiple rounds of monitoring to return the running annual average to compliance.
